OPERATION SUMMARY:

You can protect PDF files from PRINTING, CHANGES, COMMENTS and even have an EXPIRATION DATE to open the files. You can also put a PASSWORD in the file to restrict access and a OWNER PASSWORD to release all restrictions to some people. Let's see how to accomplish these protections.

Protecting PDF without Password

Protecting PDF with Passwords

Protecting without Password

In this case, everyone will be able to open the PDF file, but at the same time, everyone will be restricted to the functions that you have defined in the file.

  1. Ensure that you have a certificate loaded in this module.
  2. Load the PDF file into OBAKE. At this point, you will see the document in the Document Area.
  3. Select the PROTECT tab and set THE PERMISSIONS you want to this document. Remember: the default is ALL RESTRICTED (the user cannot perform any of the available options).
  4. Select an EXPIRATION DATE if needed.

NOTE: EXPIRATION DATE is a non-standard PDF restriction, and its purpose is to prevent PDF from being opened after a due date. The PDF reader (or browser) must have JavaScript enabled as the protection code is (additionally) written in this computer language. Warning: if JavaScript is disabled, the document cannot be read and opened.

  1. Press the PROTECT button.

Protecting with Passwords

In this case, the file will be encrypted and protected with an USER PASSWORD, that will be required for anyone to access/read the PDF. At the same time, everyone will be restricted to the functions that you have defined in the file. Note that you can also define an OWNER PASSWORD, that assures the document to be open without any restriction.

  1. Define a USER PASSWORD. This password does not release any restriction you may have set and is only used to decrypt the file and allow users to read the PDF content.
  2. Optionally, define an OWNER PASSWORD. This password bypasses all restrictions you may have set and is only used for some people to have full access to this file, including the ability to remove all restrictions and change (or clear) the USER PASSWORD.
  3. Press the PROTECT button.
